Situation called a “significant fire event” by Florida official.
The Florida Panhandle is experiencing wildfires that have already destroyed dozens of homes and forced hundreds of people to be evacuated.
Known as the Five Mile Swamp Fire, it was started by an unauthorized burn on private property and has burned more than 2,000 acres since it started on Monday in Santa Rosa County.
A spokesman for the Florida Forest Service called the situation a “significant fire event” and noted that high winds and low humidity levels driven by a cold front have helped the fire spread. A Santa Rosa County spokesperson said some 336 homes were in the path of the wildfire. Over 1,000 homes have been evacuated and approximately 1,600 people have been told to leave. Parts of Interstate 10 are closed.
Senator Rick Scott is closely monitoring the situation. The Forest Service said that three days of suppression efforts now have the fire 20 percent contained.
